pALMIRA
Palmyra, New York is an extremely significant place for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It was in the wooded hills near Palmyra where the founding event of the Restoration occurred - the First Vision - when young Joseph Smith had a glorious vision of God the Father and His Son Jesus Christ in 1820. This Sacred Grove marks the beginning of the dispensation of the fulness of times. Additionally, it was on the farms around Palmyra where Joseph Smith lived and where many of the early revelations and translations that guided the establishment of the restored Church took place.
SACRET GROVE
The Sacred Grove is one of the most sacred places for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It was here, in a secluded grove of trees, where in the spring of 1820 Joseph Smith, a 14-year-old boy, had a glorious vision of God the Father and His Son Jesus Christ, initiating the Restoration of the gospel in the latter days. This foundational event, known as the First Vision, marked the beginning of the dispersal of the world's spiritual darkness and the rebirth of eternal truth upon the earth. The Sacred Grove is a place of peace and reverence where the faithful can meditate on this founding miracle and strengthen their testimony of the true restored Church.
HILL CUMORAH
Hill Cumorah in western New York is a sacred and historic site for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. According to the teachings of the Book of Mormon, it was on this hill that the prophet Mormon buried the gold plates containing the sacred record of the ancient Nephite and Lamanite civilizations. Centuries later, in 1823, it was on this same hill that the angel Moroni appeared to Joseph Smith and directed him to the location of the plates, which Joseph eventually obtained and translated as the Book of Mormon. Hill Cumorah is revered as the place where the ancient scriptures were miraculously preserved to be brought forth in the restoration of the gospel. It is a place of pilgrimage and contemplation on the pivotal events that preceded the Restoration.
PRINTING PRESS
The printing press used to publish the first edition of the Book of Mormon in 1830 holds a prominent place in the history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. After translating the gold plates, Joseph Smith hired E.B. Grandin in Palmyra, New York to print 5,000 copies of the book. This hand-operated iron press was the one that produced those first copies of the Book of Mormon, allowing the ancient scriptures to be disseminated and paving the way for the formal organization of the restored Church months later. The original press is preserved today as a relic commemorating the miracle of the translation and the beginning of "a marvelous work and a wonder" - the restoration of the gospel on the earth.
